Some General Tips...

The Milky Way Movie (2014)

Galactogogue foods or herbs like fennel, quinoa, fenugreek, goat's rue, blessed thistle, and hops to name a few, are great to incorporate in diet or making tea blends with to increase milk supply.

Mamas can also try to nurse more often while at home to increase supply. It’s also been shown that mom’s who wear their babies in a carrier on their chest produce more milk. The baby’s neck is still developing strength in his/her muscles during the first few months, so be cautious about their neck position; they should lay horizontally with plenty of neck support while being close to the chest.

Getting off to a good start

Low Milk Supply

Maximize Breast Milk Pumping - this link is directed more to mom’s of premature babies, but the information is sound and does help for any new mom planning to utilize pumping (especially if weaning at 1 year and wanting to continue getting this nourishing food into your baby‘s diets after that). Pumping techniques can differ depending on if you are multitasking, relaxing, or warm and comfortable when pumping, all those things can effect how much milk you can get while pumping.

What If You Can't Breastfeed?

It can feel like a huge problem if you find that you can't breastfeed your infant for any reason. While there are NO GOOD infant formulas on the market (all containing one if not more unsafe ingredients for your infant's development; like soy, free-glutamate/MSG or other excitotoxins, oxidized fats and proteins and so much more), what is a new mama faced with this challenge to do?

Here are some resources that can help your baby stay nourished and give him or her all of the nutrients for proper development in this critical time.

Sarah Pope's Video demonstration on making homemade infant formulas (Weston A. Price friendly)

Weston A. Price Foundation's FAQ on Infant Formula

Check in with your local Weston A. Price Chapter and see if there are any members out there in your area making and selling WAPF friendly formulas.

Also, don't forget to check into local breast milk banking/sharing. This is a growing resource for mama's who can not breastfeed. Because it's a newer way of supporting infants (extending on the idea of wet-nursing) who's mama's can not breastfeed them themselves, it's still not regulated quite so well. PLEASE TAKE CARE in sourcing breast milk for your infant. Since we now know there is a HUGE connection with a mother's health and diet and the quality of her breast milk, you will want to investigate these background factors in your search for the most nutrient-dense food for your baby.

Here are some ideas to think about:

  1. Ask your close friends first if they are breastfeeding or know someone who is that might be willing to donate to you. You may already know about her health and diet or be able to ask directly to ensure the quality is high.
  2. If no person directly close to you is available to donate breast milk to you and your infant, check with local lactation consultants, midwives, doulas, holistic pediatricians, and birth/baby related communities in your area. This is a bit broader approach, but you should still be able to connect with someone one-on-one and be able to find the information you are looking for from the donor on their health and dietary background in the process. Typically any practitioner involved in the birthing community is more than happy to help any new mama find the resources she's looking for!
  3. Lastly, you can do a broader search online for breast milk banks and try and find a breast milk exchange program that may serve your community. These may be anonymous however and less regulated, but I do believe they screen for major illnesses and diseases at the very least and this may still be a better option than feeding your infant a formula that is highly processed and manufactured. If this is an option that you go with, consider adding an infant/baby probiotic formula to your child's diet when feeding him or her this breast milk. This can help inhabit your baby's gut with good bacteria that can help digest this food and protect their immune systems. Klaire Labs Ther-biotic Infant Formula is one I love and highly recommend.
